County Library Hosts Keynote Address and Events for Career Success Month 2025

Largo, Maryland – The Prince George’s County Memorial Library System (PGCMLS) is proud to host the Career Success Month 2025 keynote address by Walter L. Simmons, founding president & CEO of Employ Prince George's, Inc. on Tuesday, January 21 at 6:30 pm. PGCMLS will also present multiple library programs and events supporting the statewide initiative, including job seekers clubs, language clubs, computer basics classes, veteran resource sessions, and more.

Career Success Month

Coordinated and hosted by libraries across Maryland, Career Success Month 2025 (January 6​-February 28, 2025) empowers library customers with guidance and knowledge from experts in various career fields to enhance life in the workplace and provide access to the tools needed for successful career advancement. This year’s theme is “Upskill and Uplift the Future Workforce.” Career Success Month is supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) through the Library Services and Technology Act Administered by the Maryland State Library Agency (MSLA).

The Prince George's County Memorial Library System presents a keynote address by Walter L. Simmons, Founding President & CEO of Employ Prince George's, Inc., and the Executive Director of the Prince George's County Workforce Development Board, to help launch the Maryland State Library Agency’s 2025 Career Success Month.

Along with founding Employ Prince George’s, Walter led Employ Prince George’s and the Prince George’s County Workforce Development Board in creating America’s first local workforce system operating as a free membership network, the Prince George’s County American Job Center Community Network. Today, the Prince George’s County American Job Center Community Network and Employ Prince George’s have collaborated with over 200 partners, served more than 90,000 job seekers, assisted over 8,500 businesses, and helped over 15,000 Prince George’s County residents secure employment.

Welcome all veterans, active military, ROTC, potential service members, and families to Base Camp, a monthly informational and resource session for all members of the armed forces. This series, in partnership with the Prince George’s County Office of Veterans Affairs, offers participants access to upcoming events, information, initiatives, and resources that can aid veterans and their families.

Free Quarterly Expungement Clinic - Know Your Rights

Saturday, February 15 from 10:30 am-1:00 pm | Laurel Branch Library | Adults 

Join PGCMLS  for the “Free Quarterly Expungement Clinic,” where you’ll receive expert guidance and assistance in clearing eligible criminal records. This process can open new doors for employment, housing, and other opportunities, helping you move forward with confidence. A Spanish-speaking attorney will also be available to assist those who need language support. This program is presented by Martin Mitchell, Community Legal Services of PGC, and Community Partners.

Job Seekers Clubs

“Job Seekers Clubs” at PGCMLS branch libraries provide customers with assistance with interview preparation, filling out job applications, and getting answers to job-related questions from knowledgeable library staff. Staff can walk participants through the library’s many resources available to aid users in a job search.

Computer Basics Programs

Library customers can learn computer basics with hands-on training in an encouraging environment at “Computer Basics” programs that are held throughout the county. Librarians help participants gain confidence using email, Google and Microsoft programs, the internet, and other applications. They are also able to answer questions about other computer-related topics.

Conversation Clubs

Learning a second language is a great way to upskill oneself with meaningful and applicable communication skills, and the best way to sharpen those skills is by speaking with others. PGCMLS "Conversation Clubs” allows participants to converse and improve in a friendly and supportive environment.

Walter L. Simmons is the Founding President & CEO of Employ Prince George’s, Inc. and the Executive Director of the Prince George’s County Workforce Development Board. Walter partnered with Prince George’s County Government and the Prince George’s County Workforce Development Board to found Employ Prince George’s and redesign the Prince George’s County Public Workforce System in 2018.
