February 2019

A note from Roberta

Roberta Phillips, CEO

Thank you to all who attended the Meet & Greet events and to our Board of Library Trustees for hosting them. It was a pleasure talking with so many passionate and engaged customers and members of our staff. As your new CEO, I will strive to be a community leader that creates a culture of care and excellence, succeeds in building partnerships and one that advocates for the needs of our community members. Together, we will move the Library forward, exceeding the expectations of our customers, while fulfilling our vision and mission.

The Library is excited about celebrating Black History Month (February 2019) at all of our 19 branches. Enjoy watching Black history come to life in our Bright Star Theatre performances: Black History Hall of Fame, Struggle for Freedom: The Life of Dr. King, and Black History Heroes, Soldiers and Spies. Learn about famous African Americans in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields: aviators, inventors, mathematicians and scientists. Additional events include African Americans in music, dance and art. Click here to view a listing of Black History Month events @ your library.

I received Becoming by Michelle Obama as a gift and have just started reading this thought provoking book.

Always something new!

Warm regards,

Roberta R. Phillips, CEO

African American Experience

The African American Experience is a wide ranging and easy-to-use online database collection on African American history and culture. Through primary sources and prominent scholars, this database gives voice to the African American experience from its African origins to the present day.

Coverage includes critical perspectives on timely and enduring topics such as stop-and-frisk, educational desegregation and voting rights. The collection includes 1,000 biographies of famous political and social figures like W.E.B. DuBois, Barack Obama, Frederick Douglass, Mary McLeod Bethune, Amiri Baraka, Muhammad Ali, Drake and Oprah Winfrey. There is also approximately 8,000 primary and secondary sources, including the complete WPA Slave Narratives collection, speeches, court cases, quotations, advertisements and statistics.
