County Library Commemorates Juneteenth Through June 21
Largo, Md. – The Prince George’s County Memorial Library System (PGCMLS) commemorates the Juneteenth holiday with a series of events for all ages. Curated by the Library’s Black History and Culture Team, Prince Georgians can explore their creativity, local community, and the legacy of Juneteenth.
Featured programs include:
- Monday, June 13, 4 pm, Spauldings Branch Library - Juneteenth Celebration Bingo
- Wednesday, June 15, 6 pm, Virtual Event - Writers’ Group - On Juneteenth
- Thursday, June 16, 4 pm, Oxon Hill Branch Library - Story Explorers: Black is a Rainbow Color
- Saturday, June 18, 11 am, Fairmount Heights Branch Library - Juneteenth Walk in Fairmount Heights
- Saturday, June 18, 12-5 pm, Watkins Regional Park - Juneteenth Festival (Presented by the Department of Parks & Recreation)
- Tuesday, June 21, 1 pm, Oxon Hill Branch Library - Crafternoon: Juneteenth
- Tuesday, June 21, 5 pm, Spauldings Branch Library - Film Discussion: The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman

The Library’s “Black and Proud+” exhibit, which features work by Black and LGBTQ+ artists who live in the DMV, is on display at the Bowie Branch Library through the end of June, as part of both Juneteenth and LGBTQ Pride Month festivities. Featured artists include: Ny’Lah Green (Student, Suitland High School), Live’N’Tune (Artist, Upper Marlboro), MotherPat (Artist, Cheverly), Shaymar Higgs (Artist, Upper Marlboro), Leigh Marget (Artist and Former PGCPS Educator, Laurel), Jasmine Lee (Student, Suitland High School), and Rae Akino (Artist, Prince George’s County Native).
“In Freedom’s Name,” a featured exhibit about the history of Black Marylanders’ military service is on display during branch hours at the Spauldings Branch Library through June 28. It is on view at the Oxon Hill Branch Library between June 30 and July 26. The exhibit features 38 panels that include 63 major stories and 245 photographs and images. It explores the stories of Marylanders and Prince Georgians whose courage and service are an inspiration for young people and adults alike.
Upcoming Library Closures
All PGCMLS branch libraries and offices will be closed in commemoration of Juneteenth Sunday, June 19-Monday, June 20, 2022. The Library will also be closed for Independence Day Sunday, July 3-Monday, July 4, 2022.
