Largo, Md. – The Prince Geoge's County Memorial Library System will host a book discussion with NBA stars, Tony Massenburg and Walt Williams. The authors will discuss their experiences playing basketball at the University of Maryland and Len Bias's impact on their lives and careers. "Lessons from Lenny: The Journey Beyond a Shooting Star'' is a book about one of the most representative players of the Maryland area in the '80s.
Bias was born and raised in Prince George’s County; he graduated from Northwestern High School in Hyattsville. He attended Maryland University where he played on the basketball team and was the leader of the Atlantic Coast Conference. He was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame 35 years after his death from a cocaine overdose two days after being picked by the Boston Celtics.
Massenburg played basketball with his childhood idol at the University of Maryland in 1985. During an episode of the Wizards podcast, Massenburg said that Bais was "The greatest Maryland Terrapin basketball player of all time." Walt Williams has also referred to Lenny as an essential part of his career. While being a Prince George's high school All-Star, he wanted to "be like Len." Walt was inducted into the University of Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Washington, DC Sports Hall of Fame in 2018. Walt enjoys a career in finance, talks Terps for the Maryland Sports Radio Network, and is a Guest Analyst for NBC Sports Washington.
The event will be held live on our YouTube channel and in person on Wednesday, June 22, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at the Oxon Hill Branch Library. Registration is required.
