Drawn to the Library! Prince George’s County Libraries Celebrate National Library Week 2025
Largo, Maryland – Starting this Saturday, branch libraries across the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System (PGCMLS) will be hosting a variety of lively programs in observance of National Library Week.
The theme chosen by the American Library Association for this year’s celebration is Drawn to the Library! Nodding to the wide array of reasons people across the country visit libraries — from checking out favorite books and other media, to accessing career building and life skills resources, to utilizing a collection’s free seeds, activity kits, and maker spaces — Drawn to the Library! lets PGCMLS staff shine a spotlight on the diversity of cool services and programs available across the system.
Between Saturday, April 5 and Saturday, April 12, PGCMLS branches will host a variety of programming for Prince Georgians of all ages, with the celebratory capstone event being PGCMLS' all-day Geek Out Expo on Saturday, April 12 at the Surratts-Clinton Branch Library. There, kids will get to do costume storytime and have their faces painted by the Pirate Girl Painter; teens and adults will learn the basics of cosplay and Magic: The Gathering; and attendees of all ages will get to test their head-to-head mettle in one of three Super Smash Bros. tournaments that will be held throughout the day. There will also be two special anime screenings, with specific titles to be revealed next week.
Additionally, multiple branches will be hosting free special advance screenings for teens and adults throughout April of the forthcoming PBS INDEPENDENT LENS documentary, “Free For All: The Public Library,” which is set to premiere locally on MPT on April 29, 2025.
Produced by Dawn Logsdon and Lucie Faulknor, “Free For All” charts the quiet (and sometimes not-so-quiet) revolution that is the public library — both in the past and today. At a moment when community advocacy for libraries is so acutely needed, PGCMLS is proud to share this film and story with its customers and neighbors.
