“Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.”- Frederick Douglass
Research shows that having books in the home positively affects a child’s future educational growth. Children in homes with books have a greater chance to develop a love of reading, leading to a larger vocabulary and increased reading comprehension. Access to books set children up for success.
PGCMLS’ Books from Birth program sends children, ages 0 to 5 yrs. old, in Prince George’s County a free book each month. Each book is age-appropriate and theirs to keep. Prince George’s County and PGCMLS fund this program. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library provides the books.
According to the U.S. Census, there are an estimated 59,000 or more children 5 years old and under in our area. Right now, we are currently sending books to 12,000 kids. To reach more children, we need your help.
Please consider donating to the PGCMLS Foundation to cover our costs of Book from Birth outreach, sign-ups, and the books to mail to children right here in Prince George’s County. All donations are welcome, no matter how big or small.
“We received wonderful books for our 3 children in the past 5 years. Thank you for such a wonderful initiative!”- Cecile
Since 2017, PGCMLS’ Books from Birth program has distributed over 331,975 books to children in Prince George’s County. Each month over 12,000 children receive books. Could we get it up to 25,000 or more?
