This summer, grab your favorite lunch at noon and tune in to virtual conversations with the Prince George’s County Office of Human Rights and the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System on topics from how racism is making us sick to human trafficking awareness to increasing equity and opportunity in the sciences. Let’s learn together!

Lunch and Learn continues with Human Trafficking Awareness presented by Prince George’s County Human Trafficking Task Force members, Renée Battle-Brooks, Chair, and Felipe Urquilla, Task Force Administrator. What is human trafficking? Does it happen here? What are the signs and vulnerabilities? How can we get involved? Tune in on August 20th to learn and ask your questions of these two knowledgeable guests, leaders in the fight against human trafficking.

Renée Battle-Brooks, Executive Director of the Prince George’s County Office of Human Rights, has spent most of her legal career as a litigator—as an Assistant Public Defender in Maryland and as an Assistant State’s Attorney for Prince George’s County, Maryland, where she spent almost 19 years prosecuting child abuse, sexual assault, and human trafficking crimes. In December 2018, Ms. Battle-Brooks was appointed as the Executive Director of the Prince George’s County Human Relations Commission, now the Office of Human Rights (OHR). The OHR investigates complaints of discrimination, oversees the County’s Human Trafficking Task Force, manages an immigrant defense program, has responsibility for the County’s Language Access Compliance program, builds understanding across diverse communities through robust outreach, and recently started a Youth Leadership Academy. Ms. Battle-Brooks lends her services to community issues and groups, has served on the Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault board as President and board member, and is a violinist playing regularly with the New England Symphonic Ensemble.

Felipe Urquilla, Human Trafficking Division Manager within the Prince George’s County Office of Human Rights, has served in the area of Human Services for almost 15 years. Felipe has a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling and over 10 years of experience in working with vulnerable families and individuals of Prince George’s County, Maryland. From child welfare to programs for seniors and from providing therapy to providing training and professional development, Felipe is experienced in front line and leadership roles in human services and public administration that have equipped him with the knowledge and capacity to effectively serve lay residents as well as professionals of various backgrounds. Felipe’s personal mission is to use his skills and knowledge to advance the efforts for the healing and restoration of human dignity.
