A presentation of silent films with new music scores composed by UMD School of Music students!
The Music and Film program at the University of Maryland School of Music has been developed to give students, faculty and guest artists the opportunity to work together and create new music scores for silent motion pictures of all eras. As part of this program each student works closely with faculty and guest artists to learn both new and historical methods of film accompaniment. We work closely with national and international film archives and local film experts to insure a deeper understanding of this process.
The Music + Film program will present at Prince George’s County Memorial Library System branches to share this work with the wider community. Not only will this be a chance for the students to have their new scores heard, but it will also be a chance for people in our County to see these long forgotten films preserved by American archives, many of which were preserved with funding from the public through the National Film Preservation Foundation and the Library of Congress.
Presentations will also include a talk about the history of film music and the history of the UMD Music and Film program interspersed with slides and clips. One or more short films with the new score will be shown in its entirety.
