You Are on Piscataway Land: History, Culture & Sweet Fry Bread

Presented by Troi Madison Newman of the Piscataway Conoy Tribe

This hands-on experience invites participants to learn about the ancestral homelands and history of the Piscataway people. Following an engaging presentation, participants will explore the cultural significance of sweet fry bread and learn how to prepare this traditional food. Participants will also receive an at-home fry bread kit to continue the experience and make their own at home.

Sweet fry bread kits will be available for 25 customers on a first-come, first-served basis.

About the presenter:

About the presenter: Troi Madison Newman (she/her) is a Black-Indigenous legal advocate and enrolled member of the Piscataway Conoy Tribe of Maryland. She recently completed a federal judicial clerkship with the U.S. District Court, District of Arizona.

Troi earned a B.S. from Frostburg State University, an M.P.S. from George Washington University, and a J.D. from the University of Arizona College of Law, where she also completed the Indigenous Peoples Law & Policy Program (IPLP) certificate.

During law school, Troi was recognized for her commitment to public service, serving as Western Regional Chair of the National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) and Area 5 Representative for the National Native American Law Students Association (NNALSA) during the 2024–2025 term.

As a public speaker, Troi focuses on Indigenous representation and tribal sovereignty, particularly for the Piscataway Conoy Tribe. She has spoken on the stewardship of unceded lands throughout the “DMV” region at institutions including Johns Hopkins University, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, George Washington University, and the Maryland State Library.

Outside of advocacy and public service, Troi aspires to serve in the United States Congress and previously contributed as a content creator for the Harris–Walz campaign
